Tiger shark diving at Little Bahama Bank began in the early 1990s and has since become the leading destination for tiger shark diving, known as Tiger Beach. Over the last 20 years, Tiger Beach has grown in popularity, and many people have given names to the tiger sharks they encounter. This is the first official photo identification catalog of individual tiger sharks at Tiger Beach. The catalog is compiled by the most experienced and consistent dive operator at Tiger Beach and provides a record of each shark’s name, appearance, and other important information such as their visit dates, pregnancies, and social bonding.
Photographs are an effective way of identifying individual wild animals, especially marine animals. To identify each tiger shark, photographs are taken of their sides and mouth area to compare color patterns and scars. Distinct markings, such as the line between the darker top and the white underside of the shark in front of the pectoral fin, or the markings above the mouth and under the nose, can be used for identification. Some individuals have fin injuries that can also help with identification, although these may change over time. The catalog will be useful in tracking the number of sharks that visit the area and in providing interesting information about these fascinating creatures.
